Attention: Household Hazards For Our Pets

reading time: 4 minutes calls 2519

In the own four walls there are nevertheless many dangers for our pets. Poisoning, electric shocks, bruises and fractures caused by sharp corners or tilted windows. Even the open washing machine is a source of danger. So, if you have animals in the home, the first thing you need to do is make everything safe. This is a reminder to make the household safe for children. It should be handled similarly with pets. After all, nothing should happen to any resident. But what are the actual sources of danger?

Tilted Windows: Trapping And Permanent Damage Possible

Quite specifically for cats, a tilted window represents a magic point. But the tilted window can be very dangerous for cats. In some cases, it can even be fatal or cause lifelong paralysis. The animals can:

  • get caught
  • Suffer bruises
  • struggle with hind leg disabilities for life

Tilt window syndrome also exists, with which the cat has to fight for a long time. Of course, you do not have to do without ventilation. At that time, as long as the cat must be moved to another room. But there are also special window locks that prevent the cat from getting stuck.

Close Various Openings

In the apartment there are many objects that are simply left open. But this should be avoided at all costs. Toilet lids and washing machines should be closed so that the cat does not accidentally get inside. Also balcony doors should not be left open unattended when a pet is in the room. Sometimes it’s just the little things that can cause big mischief.

Tidying Up Is A Must

It is also important to keep your home tidy. Neither sharp nor pointed objects should be found in the environment of a pet. Above all, it is also important to keep the following things safe and locked away:

  • Medication
  • Sweets
  • Cigarette butts
  • Threads and strings
  • Gift ribbons
  • Nails and pins
  • Small items such as marbles, small toys (Lego, Playmobil!), hair clips, rubber bands, etc.

All these things represent pure sources of danger. Cigarettes belong in the garbage, because they are poison for the animals. Loose threads and the like could lead to intestinal obstruction in the animal in the worst case. Special care should be taken to hide these things from young dogs and cats. Small kittens love to play with anything that is light and can be thrown around. Puppies and young dogs like to put all kinds of things in their mouths and chew on them, so it is very easy for them to swallow something. If children live in the household, it is advisable not to leave the pet unattended in the children’s room, as experience has shown that there are particularly many small parts lying around.

Put Away Sharp And Pointed Objects

If a cat is part of the household, it is essential that all sharp and pointed objects are stored away so that the animal cannot injure itself. So this means that knives, forks and co. should disappear in the drawers. Because only in this way are the four-legged friends safe from injury. Cats do not belong on the table or in the cupboard. But they do jump up once, so it can come to enormous injuries due to lying around knives, scissors, needles and other objects.

Poisonous In House And Garden

Especially the area of plants is very critical to look at. There are some houseplants that are really poisonous for the pets, for example, lily of the valley and Wandelröschen. Even the poinsettia can be dangerous for the cat. If you have a garden, you should also check it for poisonous plants. Of course, not everything has to be removed, sometimes a generous pruning is enough, for example with oleander or rhododendron. Highly toxic for pets are, among others, aconite, angel’s trumpet and ivy, so here you should think about complete removal.

The use of pesticides such as slug pellets or rat poison should be completely avoided at all costs! This is also so toxic for animals that consumption can be fatal.

Securing The Home

If a small puppy lives in the house, you should possibly secure the stairs in the beginning. Puppies can still be very clumsy, but at the same time are naturally curious. However, one wrong step can lead to a fall down the stairs, which can cause serious injuries.

Cats, as is well known, have a mind of their own. Therefore, it is not so easy to teach them what to do and what not to do. If you are active in the kitchen, you should be careful that your cat does not jump on the hot stove or into a pot with hot contents. After cooking, the hot stove top should still be secured by a pot with water. This is the only way to protect the cat from burns.

Electric cables lying around openly have a magical attraction for cats and young dogs. After all, the soft sheathing is wonderful to chew on. Therefore, the cables should also be laid and stored in such a way that the fur noses can not get to the cable and chew on it. Because as soon as the insulation of the cable is chewed off, the danger of suffering an electric shock is great. And there’s no need to mention what that means for the four-legged friends. Cable ducts and socket protectors should therefore be mandatory.

If you have cats, you should definitely think about securing the balcony. Especially on higher floors, a fall can lead to serious injuries on the one hand, and on the other hand, purely residential cats can no longer find their way back and can thus disappear without a trace. A cat net provides a quick and easy remedy. Whether you are allowed to install a net, you should clarify in advance with landlord or property management.

Alarm Signal: Now You Should Go To The Vet!

  • If your pet has fallen from a great height
  • If you know or suspect that your animal has swallowed something poisonous or sharp-edged
  • If your pet has a major, bleeding wound
  • If your pet is suddenly apathetic, refuses to move, vomits several times, salivates heavily, or foams at the mouth.
  • If your animal has a major burn wound
