Jewelry From Animal Hair – Win A Unique Piece Of Jewelry!

Stroking the fur of our pet holds so much strength and comfort that it is difficult to describe in words. And many a pet owner wishes to always carry a small memento of the beloved animal with him. This wish comes up especially when the four-legged friend has passed away. This was also the case for Susanne Beckmann. When her little cat Morpheus died in 2011 at the age of just 9 months, her hand kept stroking through the cat’s brushed-out fur. Involuntarily, she formed a small bead from the hair. The idea of making jewelry from animal hair was born.

Ms. Beckmann was kind enough to make herself available for an interview about her unusual art:

Pet Guide.com: Ms. Beckmann, which commissions do you still remember today?

Susanne Beckmann: I remember a great many commissions, whether because the animal, when I was able to look at it in a photo, directly touched my heart, or also because a special, often very personal relationship developed with the person, which continues beyond the commission.

I especially remember a little dog named Bingo, who unfortunately passed away while I was making several pieces of jewelry for his family with his hair. This was also very painful for me, but after the family received the jewelry, they were so happy to have their little treasure tangibly with them again in this way. The same feeling that I felt with my first fur bead.

Other orders, however, I forget very quickly. These are those whose clients have something made quite unemotionally because the piece of jewelry doesn’t mean much to them, they simply order a gift that was so desired by someone. Fortunately, this happens very rarely.

Pet Guide.com: How sensitive is the jewelry, do you have to pay attention to something when wearing it?

Susanne Beckmann: The jewelry is already more sensitive than, for example, a tank bracelet made of thick stainless steel. But it depends very much on the piece of jewelry. A necklace, for example, is less sensitive than a bracelet or a ring, which are exposed to more stress.

However, in the vast majority of cases, the jewelry is worn and treated with care and consideration, so that it hardly ever needs to be repaired.

A keychain I advise not to use on the daily used key ring but to hang on the key board or on a key that is rarely used. Considering how many key fobs have had to be replaced over time because they became unsightly, this is certainly understandable.

One thing to keep in mind about all jewelry is that it is not waterproof and must be taken off for bathing and showering. The water itself is not problematic, it is the soapy water that can settle on the hair and make it unsightly. Especially behind glass this is problematic, with an open fur element the suds could be rinsed out.

Pet Guide.com: Can jewelry also be made from the hair of several animals?

Susanne Beckmann: Yes, I actually do that quite often. With glass elements it is generally feasible, if you want an open fur element the hair of each animal must be brushed out undercoat and also be compatible with each other.

But it also happens again and again that the hair of mistress, master or their own children together with the hair of the beloved animal are combined in a piece of jewelry.

Pet Guide.com: Which animals actually live in your household?

Susanne Beckmann: I am very lucky to share the house with two wonderful tomcats (see photo ->). The luck is completed, besides my husband, by the fact that my studio and my office are in our house, so I can always have the two mice around me and both follow me wherever I am.

Pet Guide.com: Had you ever been involved in jewelry design before pet hair jewelry?

Susanne Beckmann: No, I was never a particularly big jewelry wearer – probably because it never had that special meaning for me.

In 2013, I was honored as a “talent” at one of the largest jewelry fairs in Frankfurt with a booth where I was able to introduce myself to a large, international audience. And that’s how I actually feel about it, it is a previously unknown talent that can reflect especially the animal, its appearance and also its character in a piece of jewelry.

Hair without a picture of the fur donor in front of my eyes, do not give me pleasure in the design and also give no further inspiration.

Pet Guide.com: What are the minimum costs I have to expect when I commission a piece of jewelry from you?

Susanne Beckmann: It’s hard to give a general answer to that. A fur bead on a nylon band with a sterling silver clasp, the floating fur bead like my first piece of jewelry, costs €35 – a bracelet with braided tail hair, beads with hair from the pet and with various beads made of gemstones or sterling silver sometimes costs €250. A heart medallion made of stainless steel and glass costs 65 € with a leather or imitation leather strap with sterling silver clasp, but it can also be a little more expensive if a photo of the animal is incorporated or additional pendants are desired.
