Dog Sport – Fit With Your Dog, Everything You Need To Know

Dog Sport Is Fun, Exercise And Education At The Same Time

Do you want to create the greatest possible harmony between you and your dog? Then dog sports is exactly the right thing for you! Here you will find everything you need to know about dog sports.

Dog sports are sports between dogs and humans. The goal of dog sports is to keep your dog busy. Of course, the fun should not come too short.

So you should do dog sports, in addition, to exercising with your dog. It is very important that your dog gets enough exercise. Dogs that are not sufficiently occupied can become behaviorally conspicuous and thus also disturb the harmony between you and your dog.

Here Are A Few Dog Sports:

Utility Dog Sports

The three elements of working dog sports are obedience, tracking, and protection. This is the oldest dog sport and demands a lot from our four-legged friends.

Tracking Work

Here there are 400 to 800 step long tracks, which the dog must follow. In addition, he must recognize up to 3 objects and point or indicate them.

Subordination

The dog has to show that it executes the handler’s hearing signal quickly, accurately, and attentively. These audible signals are commands such as free-following, sit, down, and stand commands from the movement, also retrieving exercises.

Protection Service

In the protection service, the obedience of your dog is tested in borderline situations. It starts with the detection of a “pretender”. Then the prevention of an escape attempt, the prevention of an attack, and the surveillance are tested.
For this, the discipline of the handler and the behavior of the dog are very important.
For example, your dog is required to be strong nerves, self-confident, resilient, and balanced.

Companion Dog Test

In the first part of the test, the dog is tested to see if it can be led by its owner through various tasks and situations without any problems. In the second part of the test, the dog must show whether it obeys its owner in public areas and in traffic.
This test is an important basic requirement for all dog sports. Also a basis for a harmonious everyday life for you and your dog.
However, there are requirements to be admitted to the exam at all. The dog owner must prove before the beginning of the examination a knowledge test, in which he shows whether he has the necessary basic knowledge of dog keeping. The dogs must have a minimum age of 15 months. In addition, the dog must have a chip or tattoo to clearly establish its identity.

Dog Dancing

Here you can give free rein to your creativity. No matter if heelwork or freestyle. However, there are big differences between the two classes of Dog Dancing. While freestyle is all about harmony and expression between you and your dog, heelwork is all about precise jumps and tricks.
Every dog has the opportunity to participate in Dog Dance with his owner with great pleasure in tournaments or training. There are no limits to the imagination. When working together on the choreography of man and dog, the connection of both is very much strengthened.

Dog Frisbee

Hundesport

A sport, which is also played with pleasure among humans, comes from the USA and becomes more and more popular in Germany: “Discdogging”! In this sport, there are three disciplines
-Freestyle
-Mini-Distance
-Long-Distance

Freestyle is mainly about combining different variations and sequences that are not fixed. The choreography usually lasts 2 minutes. Different throwing techniques and tricks are performed. A harmonious transition with suitable music is important.

In Mini-Distance, the goal is to score as many points as possible in a time of 60 or 90 seconds in which the dog catches the Frisbee. Only the throws that are caught by your dog in the air are counted. There are recorded zones, each of which gives more or fewer points.

In Long-Distance there is no time limit as in Mini-Distance. Here the goal is to throw the frisbee farther than the opponents. However, only the discs caught by the dog count. For this, you have three attempts. The winner is the one who has the farthest caught throw out of the three.

Flyball

In flyball, any dog can participate, because it is open to any size and breed. This sport is also fun for spectators.
Two teams compete against each other in this competitive sport. The teams consist of 4 teams each. One team consists of the dog and the dog owner. Each dog must first jump over 4 hurdles without its owner and then press a trigger on the flyball box. A ball is thrown out of the flyball box, which the dog must catch. When he has caught the ball he runs back over the hurdles to the starting line.
This is a playful way to promote social behavior, the joy of movement, and self-confidence of the dog.

Tournament Dog Sport

If you love your dog and the movement, then you are exactly right with this sport!
The tournament dog sport is also called athletics with dogs. Here you and your pet are equally challenged. You can compete against other participants at the highest level of sports with dogs.
Man and dog prove their abilities in four disciplines. It begins with tests of obedience, an obstacle course to slalom, and a hurdle race. Of course, the focus is on the harmonious interaction between man and animal.
Also popular are Combination Speed Cup and the cross-country run. The courses are 1,000, 2,000 or 5,000 meters long. The Combination Speed Cup (CSC) is a relay race with hurdles. The runs are completed by three participants each. Here, the winner is the one who runs through the parkour the fastest and without any mistakes, and in the end, achieves the best time from two runs. Each mistake, such as omitted obstacles, brings penalty seconds.

Greyhound Race

Hundesport

This race was started by the English. Later the race came to Central Europe and became more and more popular. The dog sport is a race in which the greyhounds chase their prey. In this process, their natural instinct to pursue animals on the run is trained. Therefore, in each race a prey is placed in front of the dogs. Since a live prey was banned, dummies are used.

As you can see, there are many possibilities in dog sports. Maybe there is the right one for you!
