Breed Description

The Pug, called “pug” in English, is a mini dog breed with a characteristic appearance. According to the FCI, the standard of the breed is led by Great Britain.

Origin And History Of The Breed

Today’s historiography assumes that the pug is said to have existed more than 2000 years ago in the then Empire of China. There he is said to have been bred from mastiff-like dogs. For a long time he was kept at the court of the emperors and was supposed to be passed on only privileged to the noble class.

However, it also happened that dogs that were apparently not suitable for further breeding were sold to the people. Thus, this breed was able to multiply outside the upper class.

In the 16th century the Pug came to the Netherlands through the East India Company. There he was mainly kept by noble and famous ladies. Due to this, the dog also made it to some paintings, which depicted these ladies together with their pet

With time, the dog also reached the civilian population and became a fashionable dog. In England, too, the breed quickly found great favor and was thereupon selectively bred. Unfortunately, as breeding continued, the health of the breed suffered because the dog’s nose was bred to be flatter and flatter. This caused increased respiratory problems and other health problems for this breed.

In 2010, the FCI reacted to this health-threatening development and revised the standard. Since then, today’s breeding is again more oriented towards the original image of the Pug with a longer muzzle.

Appearance

Mops

The appearance of a Pug is usually very easy to recognize. Besides its buggy eyes and its small, wrinkled head, its short muzzle is most characteristic. However, this causes frequent respiratory problems of this breed.

In addition, the often encountered muzzle is due to the specific breeding of these. The original variant of the Pug had a much longer and, accordingly, healthier snout. Thanks to a change in the standard, today’s breeding again increasingly relies on longer fronts.

The Pug belongs to the so-called mini breeds and can reach a weight between 6 to 8 kg. The coat of the Pug can also appear in three color variations. In addition to black and silver, various cream colors can also adorn the coat. The coat of the animals is usually short, smooth and slightly shiny.

Character And Temperament

Pugs are very affectionate dogs that seek closeness to their mistress or master. For this reason, they are also reluctant to be left alone for long. Thanks to their small size, however, they can be easily transported and taken along in most cases.

In addition, these dogs have a very loving character and are friendly towards people. At the same time, they also have a very playful and cheerful nature. They like to play with their owner and to be amused. Even though they are very small dogs, one should not underestimate their intelligence.

The pug has more on it than you think. With the right education, the pug can even be trained to do some tricks. The Pug also always wants new challenges to master.

Husbandry And Diet

Due to its small size, the Pug is naturally a dog that likes to be kept in an apartment. This is also not tragic. The Pug does not really have great demands on its living environment. However, one should not neglect the daily run of the dog. This can otherwise quickly become restless.

In general, the Pug can be kept in an urban environment without any problems. He is not particularly loud and does not make much noise. Nevertheless, he should not be left alone for too long. The Pug is a very affectionate dog that does not like to be separated from its owner. Therefore, it is optimal if there is always a family member at home.

In addition, due to its size, the pug can be easily transported or taken along in a suitable dog bag. However, you should not drag the dog around permanently in this, after all, it is still a dog that needs the movement. Sufficiently loaded, the pug likes to spend the evening with his mistress or master on or next to the couch.

He especially loves the loving cuddles and caresses of his owner. Pugs are usually very easy to care for. Also the education of this is normally unproblematic and can be accomplished also by dog beginners.

Diet

The Pug belongs to the dog breeds that tend to overweight quickly. Due to its small size, the food rations should be dosed accurately. In addition, the giving of treats should not get out of hand too much.

Important for a healthy and balanced diet of the dog is a high meat content together with vegetables and fruit. Whether wet or dry food is ultimately up to the owner.

To avoid overfeeding the dog, one should make sure that the food contains rather few carbohydrates and not too much fat. Healthy fiber like a lot of protein should be the basis of the food.

Education And Care

In general, the Pug is easy to train and is therefore suitable for beginners. However, one should start as early as possible with the education. Already from the puppy age one should face the dog with affectionate severity.

Setting clear rules is especially important in the beginning. The Pug is a dog that normally listens to the words of its owner, but it can sometimes show a somewhat stubborn attitude. Such behavior should be met as calmly and lovingly as possible, but without undermining its own authority.

The dog must know at all times who is in charge and this should definitely be the owner. For owners who are still inexperienced with dogs, it is advisable to go to a dog training school. There, both the dog and the owner learn the right way to deal with each other as well as with others.

In addition, the little four-legged friend meets there early on conspecifics. An early socialization in the environment and with other dogs is very important to get used to the encounter with people and other dogs.

Care

The Pug has a short and smooth coat, which makes it in principle a very low-maintenance dog. However, since the Pug is a year-round shedder, it makes sense to brush it regularly and remove loose hair.

Alternatively, the countless hairs will spread all over the apartment. This can never be completely prevented, but if you can already remove most of the hair from the dog, it is easier than to vacuum it out of the corners. It therefore makes sense to brush several times a week and collect the loose hairs.

Health And Typical Diseases

Due to the fact that the dog’s nose has become shorter and shorter in recent years, in very many cases it suffers from severe shortness of breath. This condition can in turn affect the overall health and stamina of the dog.

Shortness of breath is most noticeable through loud snorting during the day as well as snoring at night. In particularly severe cases, it may be advisable to have a professional surgical procedure performed. This is meanwhile already a routine procedure and is used in many veterinary clinics.

Small dog breeds also suffer from various other conditions. Some of them can be hip dysplasia, patella luxation or demodicosis. Besides this last mentioned skin disease, eye inflammation can also occur. A regular cleaning of the eyes can prevent this however well.

Life Expectancy

Pugs normally reach an age between 12 and 15 years.

Buy Dog Breed Pug

Pug puppies can be purchased from a reputable breeder from a price of 600-800€. It is advisable to buy from a registered breeder, because they put a lot of emphasis on the health of their animals and can therefore exclude many hereditary diseases as far as possible. The litter should be looked at carefully before buying.

It can even be useful to visit puppies at different breeders. The attitude of the animals can already give a lot of information about the health of these. Before buying, you should also get detailed information about the breed.

In addition to buying a puppy from a breeder, you can also visit various animal shelters. There are usually already adult and older dogs waiting for a new home. If you don’t mind, you should get detailed advice from the resident staff about the particular dogs.

Some may have a stunning past behind them and need extra careful handling. Adopting a four-legged friend from a shelter is therefore recommended especially for people who are already experienced with dogs. Dealing with these animals can be quite challenging.

Decision Support

You have found interest in the pug, but are not yet sure whether it is the right choice for you? Then we give you here a little help to decide.

First and foremost, you should be aware that a pug is also a full dog that needs your full attention. Getting a four-legged friend can affect the next 10 years of your life or even longer.

Therefore, you should know exactly whether you want to have a constant companion by your side over this period. The advantage of the pug is that it can be kept in a city apartment without any problems. However, daily exercise should not be neglected.

Pugs are also relatively easy to train and are perfectly suitable even for novice dog owners, as long as they take good care of the dog’s education. If you can imagine the above points well, you will have a faithful companion as well as cuddly roommate by your side for years to come.
