Origin And Breed History

The Corat is a very original breed, originating from Southeast Asia. In Thai monasteries once lived during the Ayudhya epoch (1350 to 1767) not only the Siamese, but also some other, less known slender cat breeds. Among these was also the Korat. Supposedly, it was already mentioned in writing in Thailand in the 14th century.

In its native Thailand, the Corat used to be called “Si-Sawat” (Sawat = luck and prosperity) and was much sought after by the nobility. For the Thai, the Korat is considered a lucky charm and is often given as a gift at weddings.

The first specimens of the Corat came to Europe at the end of the 50s and were mated with Bluepoint Siamese to avoid inbreeding. After that, the Korat slowly made its way to America and Europe.

The first breeding pair was imported to the USA. From there began an incomparable triumphal procession around the world. Since 1983, the Korat has been recognized by FIFé. Although oriental breeds are very popular worldwide, the Korat is still a relatively rare breed outside Thailand.

Even today there are very few Corat breeders in Germany, so if you would like to have a Corat, you should be prepared for a longer waiting period.

Breed Description

Corat cats are calm and sociable, but at the same time very intelligent and playful. They make ideal pets and can be very attached to their human friends.

Appearance Of The Korat

Oriental shape, heart-shaped face and silver-blue, silver-tipped coat make the Corat unique. She is of medium size, medium weight and muscular behind her gentle curves. The hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, and the tail is of medium length.

The body of the Corat cat is somewhat strong overall and slightly tapered at the waist. The neck is relatively short and joins the broad chest. The shoulders of the Corat are slightly broader than its chest.

The coat of the Corat is short, silky, finely glossy and has no undercoat. It lies smooth and close to the body. The color is silver-blue with silver hair tips. Unlike the blue coat of many other cat breeds, the gene for the blue color of the Corat is inherited dominantly.

The eyes of the Corat are very large, round and shine bright green in the adult cat. They stand wide apart in the heart-shaped face with its broad, flat forehead. The ears are large, set high and have rounded tips.

Oriental shape, heart-shaped face and silver-blue, silver-tipped coat make the unique.

Character And Temperament

The rare Corat is a gentle and affectionate breed. She is very sociable and is most comfortable with a few of her own kind and her humans. The Corat is a rather dominant cat that gets along with its peers, but will play first fiddle here. With a strong sense of self-confidence, the Corat allows herself to be courted by her humans and repays them with a loving and affectionate nature.

Corat loves to explore all the rooms of the house, the neighbor’s garden or the meadows and woods as much as she loves to be petted.

She is extremely curious, attentive and loves to participate in everything her human pack leader does. The sociable cat does not like boredom and loneliness. She appreciates an animal companion with whom she can play and scuffle.

Attitude

The Corat is very similar in behavior and needs to domestic farm cats (European Shorthair). She loves the outdoors and should therefore be kept as a free-roaming cat in rural areas.

Keeping them indoors only comes into question if the owner can spend enough time for this demanding cat. She wants to be kept busy and cared for, and not too little.

However, the Corat definitely wants to have a playmate.

Nutrition

Before acquiring an animal, it is basically important to inform yourself comprehensively about a balanced and appropriate diet. About the nutrition of your Corat cat you should ask the former owner or the breeder. He will be happy to provide you with expert information.

On this point there are several criteria to be considered. In order to ensure a balanced and appropriate diet, you should adapt it to the age, the weight and the urge to move of your Corat cat. Also, you should try to set the feeding always at the same time.

As for the amount of food, the rule of thumb is 70 kcal per kg. When storing the food, make sure that the storage place has the right temperature.

Care

The expenditure of the fur care is rather manageable with the Corat cat. The short and silky coat of the Corat is very easy to maintain. Since it has no undercoat, it hardly sheds. The daily handle to the vacuum cleaner is not necessary. Nevertheless, loose hair should be removed twice a week with a fine comb.

The coat of the Corat cat does not require any special care, but it enjoys being brushed with a soft brush and is happy about the accompanying attention of its human friend.

Health And Typical Diseases

Since the Corat as a breed has been mostly spared from breeding influences and it has a large, natural gene pool, it is considered to be extremely robust and immune strong. However, all cats have the potential to develop genetic health problems.

It is known that Corat cats can suffer from gangliosidosis, a hereditary enzyme deficiency that affects the nervous system and can lead to paralysis.

Affected cats show progressive disturbances in nerve function as early as 3-6 months of age. This becomes obvious by trembling of the head, coordination problems of the hind legs or growth retardation. Since this disease progresses rapidly, affected cats rarely reach their first year of life.

Life Expectancy Of The Korat

The Corat cat is quite long-lived and it is not uncommon for it to reach an age of 18 to 19 years.

Buying Corat

If you are considering buying the adorable and beautiful Corat cat, it is recommended in an animal welfare sense to exhaust adoption resources first. This is because even purebred Corats sometimes end up in shelters and animal rescue centers.

Taking in a Corat cat from a shelter is preferable to buying it first. But of course there are also recommendable reputable breeders where you can buy a Corat cat. When the cat comes from the breeder to your home, it should already be vaccinated, dewormed, chipped and health checked.

Decision Support

The Corat cat loves peace and quiet. Due to its good-natured nature, the Corat is a good friend for children. She gets along with children and dogs as long as she is not treated rudely.

The Corat readily and amazingly sensitively adapts to people’s wants and needs. The Corat will easily fit into your family’s daily routine and habits without imposing her wishes or whims on you.
