Origin And Breed History

The Corat is a very original breed, originating from Southeast Asia. In Thai monasteries once lived during the Ayudhya epoch (1350 to 1767) not only the Siamese, but also some other, less known slender cat breeds. Among these was also the Korat. Supposedly, it was already mentioned in writing in Thailand in the 14th century.

In its native Thailand, the Corat used to be called “Si-Sawat” (Sawat = luck and prosperity) and was much sought after by the nobility. For the Thai, the Korat is considered a lucky charm and is often given as a gift at weddings.

The first specimens of the Corat came to Europe at the end of the 50s and were mated with Bluepoint Siamese to avoid inbreeding. After that, the Korat slowly made its way to America and Europe.

The first breeding pair was imported to the USA. From there began an incomparable triumphal procession around the world. Since 1983, the Korat has been recognized by FIFé. Although oriental breeds are very popular worldwide, the Korat is still a relatively rare breed outside Thailand.

Even today there are very few Corat breeders in Germany, so if you would like to have a Corat, you should be prepared for a longer waiting period.

Breed Description

Corat cats are calm and sociable, but at the same time very intelligent and playful. They make ideal pets and can be very attached to their human friends.

Appearance Of The Korat

Oriental shape, heart-shaped face and silver-blue, silver-tipped coat make the Corat unique. She is of medium size, medium weight and muscular behind her gentle curves. The hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, and the tail is of medium length.

The body of the Corat cat is somewhat strong overall and slightly tapered at the waist. The neck is relatively short and joins the broad chest. The shoulders of the Corat are slightly broader than its chest.

The rare Corat is a gentle and affectionate breed. She is very sociable and is most comfortable with a few of her own kind and her humans. The Corat is a rather dominant cat that gets along with its peers, but will play first fiddle here.
