Frozen food – species-appropriate, versatile and tasty raw food for healthy four-legged friends

The most important ingredient of frozen food is raw meat, which should not be missing in species-appropriate dog food. It is offered pure or together with vegetable ingredients in balanced ready meals. Frozen food is the main ingredient in BARFing, but it can also add a healthy boost to any traditional canned or dry food.

Frozen food – it’s all about the meat

Frozen food consists of all or a high percentage of frozen, raw meat. For the dog as a carnivore, it offers a species-appropriate and healthy alternative to conventional canned and dry food. In addition, the frozen treats have a longer shelf life than fresh food and can easily be portioned individually to suit the four-legged friend. If your freezer has enough space, you can make your four-legged friend’s diet particularly versatile and healthy with frozen food. However, the high-quality frozen meat is not a complete food, it must be supplemented with vegetable ingredients in any case.
You can choose from products made from beef, poultry, horse meat, lamb, game, rabbit or goat meat. They form the basis for delicious BARF menus, which you can mix for your dog yourself. You can find out everything about BARFing here

Recently, frozen fish, such as salmon, has also been added to the product range. Even real vitamin bombs like green leafy stomach from cattle are offered as frozen food. Pork, however, is not suitable as frozen food for dogs. It can contain viruses that cause Aujeszky’s disease, which can be fatal for dogs.

Canned and also dry foods, which often use low-quality offal, can be greatly enhanced by high-quality muscle meat from the freezer. Ultra-high-temperature canned food, with preservatives to boot, gets a healthy boost of vitamins and minerals from thawed fresh meat.

Frozen ready meals for the dog

Since mixing a balanced, wholesome dog meal is very time-consuming and requires some knowledge and experience, frozen ready meals are a practical and safe alternative. They contain all the nutrients that the pelt-noses need in an appropriate mixing ratio. High-quality frozen menus for dogs are grain-free and contain, in addition to meat, pureed raw fruits and vegetables as the main ingredient. Additions of linseed, sunflower or rapeseed oil provide the animal with valuable unsaturated fatty acids. They ensure healthy skin and a shiny coat.
Another important ingredient of frozen complete meals are finely ground bones and fresh herbs, which provide the pet with additional vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Caution: feeding only raw complete meals makes the dog’s feces very hard. Additions of good oils reduce this effect. However, it is better for the four-legged friend to do without additional chewing items made from animal bones.

Frozen food as valuable chewing articles

It does not always have to be a pig’s ear or the traditional chewing bone. Frozen turkey, duck, chicken or goose necks guarantee long-lasting chewing pleasure without preservatives and other chemical additives. The healthy snacks are perfect calcium suppliers. They clean, strengthen and care for the dog’s teeth and are also useful helpers when puppies are changing teeth.

How can you recognize high-quality frozen food?

Not every frozen food meets all the requirements for a balanced diet. A careful look at the label is therefore advisable. The composition and origin of the meat used should be clearly declared. Organic meat is always the best choice.
Ideally, in addition to at least 50 percent muscle meat, the frozen dog food also contains vitamin-rich offal and no low-quality slaughterhouse waste. Additives that can trigger allergies should also not be on the list of ingredients. See also the test reports on various types of frozen food on these pages

Take note: Frozen food for dogs should be frozen at temperatures between -17 to -20 degrees Celsius for at least one week

With frozen ready meals, balance is key. Here is a rough guideline for the composition of frozen complete meals:

  • animal proteins from 70 to 85 percent meat
  • ten to 15 percent plant-based vital substances from raw fruits and vegetables
  • Proportion of bone meal of up to five percent
  • the menu should be free of cereals and gluten
  • Addition of high-quality oils
  • Addition of fresh herbs to aid digestion
  • no artificial additives such as flavor enhancers, colorings or preservatives

Pre-formed nuggets make it easier to portion the food exactly to your pet.

The correct handling of frozen fresh food

Handling frozen food requires a lot of care from the dog owner. Raw meat can contain salmonella, which can cause dangerous diarrhea in humans and animals. Therefore, dog food should not come into contact with food intended for human consumption during thawing. This is especially true for food containing poultry meat. After feeding, the feeding bowl and, if necessary, the worktop and cutlery must be cleaned thoroughly.
A daily portion should be thawed slowly in the refrigerator. Any meat juice that escapes contains vitamins and minerals and therefore belongs in the food bowl.
Once defrosted, meals should be fed to the animal immediately when they reach room temperature, and leftovers should be disposed of immediately.
The exclusive feeding of puppies with frozen fresh food is controversial. You can find detailed information about this here
