Breed History And Origin

The Teddy Dwarf rabbit originated in Germany and is a fairly new breed. However, it was able to establish itself well and is now recognized by the Union of German Rabbit Breeders.

in 2012, they even chose the Teddy there as the breed of the year. However, Teddy Dwarfs are not yet an officially recognized breed.

Appearance And Character Of The Teddy Dwarf

From the character, the Teddy Dwarf rabbits are trusting, calm and playful animals. Moreover, they belong to the friendly and bright rabbit breed.

The Teddy Dwarf rabbits actually have something of a teddy bear with their long, cuddly fur, short ears and roundish head and body. The ears of the Teddy Dwarfs are about 6 inches and stand relatively wide apart.

The soft, bushy fur grows up to 10 cm long over the entire body and is almost unique among rabbit breeds. Teddy Dwarfs reach a weight of up to 1.5 kg.

The breeders of Teddy Dwarfs have not decided on any particular color, all colors and patches are allowed. That is why they are available in a particularly wide range of beautiful colors.

Husbandry Of The Teddy Dwarf

Teddies are small, quiet and therefore very suitable for keeping in one of the apartment.

Like all rabbits, the little teddies need enough space. That is, they must be able to move and behave according to their nature. They need a sufficiently large cage, in which they can hobble around and which leaves them enough space in the height, in order to be able to stand up from time to time to “make man”.

A commercial small animal cage with minimum dimensions of about 160 x 60 x 50 cm is sufficient. Even a spacious hutch is not enough. In addition to this, the rabbit must be given daily exercise indoors or, if available, in the garden in an enclosure.

Although they have long fur, Teddy Dwarfs are only conditionally suitable for year-round outdoor keeping. The prerequisite for this is an optimal winter quarters.

During the summer months, however, they naturally enjoy plenty of fresh air, sunshine and exercise in the garden. Rabbits as social animals must always be kept together with conspecifics.

Nutrition And Care

Teddy Dwarfs have a sensitive digestion and must be fed a balanced diet appropriate to their species. This includes green food, fruit, vegetables and herbs.

The beautiful, fluffy fur must be combed or brushed regularly, otherwise the fur will become matted and dirty. Also the cage should be kept especially clean, because the long hairs absorb moisture and dirt much easier than short ones.

The fur care should be practiced already with the young rabbits, so that it does not degenerate later into stress. It is also advisable to trim the fur at least in the anal region.

Health And Typical Diseases

Teddy Dwarf rabbits are quite hardy if care is taken to keep their fur and enclosure clean at all times. There are no known predispositions to any particular diseases.

Life Expectancy Of The Teddy Dwarf

The life expectancy of the Teddy Dwarf is 6-8 years.

Decision Support

Buying kittens from a breeder has a big advantage especially with Teddy Dwarf rabbits. You know what you get. Otherwise it is not impossible that they are mixes.
