Green Giant – The Green Iguana

The Green Iguana is the largest of the approximately 700 known iguana species. Since it has high demands on humidity, temperature and environment, it is only conditionally suitable for terrarium beginners. In any case, it should be informed in detail about the species-appropriate attitude beforehand.

Despite the name “green iguana”, the color of most animals tends to gray-green or even brownish.

Iguanas are stately animals. This is especially emphasized by the large head with the dewlap and the dorsal crest, which extends from the back to the tail.

A small secret weapon of the iguana is located on its head. The so-called “third eye”. This is in fact a real eye, with which iguana can detect shadows and movements.

Nutrition Of The Green Iguana

The Green Iguana is the vegetarian among the reptiles. Now and then, small gifts of meat in the form of mealworms or small grasshoppers are okay, but they are not necessary.

The green iguana prefers to eat salads, herbs and leaves. In addition, vegetables and some sweet fruit as a small snack in between.

The Terrarium For The Green Iguana

Before choosing a Green Iguana, one should be aware of the enormous size of the terrarium. The minimum dimensions for a single animal are 2.00 x 2.00 x 2.00 m. Larger is of course even better. Larger is of course even better.

As with other reptiles, temperature and humidity are of critical importance and should be checked frequently accordingly.

In the iguana terrarium should be enough climbing opportunities in the form of branches and twigs and some plants. Since iguanas are real water rats, there should also be a watering hole in the terrarium. The furnishing of the terrarium is best purchased at a specialty store. There you can be well advised and the utensils are then also really suitable for the animal and hygienically perfect.
