Sociable Beginner Reptile – The Leopard Gecko

You can say that about leopard geckos. In contrast to other reptiles they are relatively insensitive, with a little patience they become hand-tame and you don’t need any keeping papers.

In addition, the leopard gecko now comes in many exotic shades, such as bizzard (white or gray) or jungle (yellow or orange with a black “camouflage” pattern).

Leopard geckos can shed their tails when in danger, so always handle them very carefully. The tail does grow back, but not as nicely as the original one.

Leopard geckos are very social, so you should always keep at least two animals together. The best combination is one male with two or three females.

Diet Of The Leopard Gecko

The main meal of the leopard gecko consists of insects such as mealworms, house crickets, beetles and crickets. In addition to the live food you can also give some small cut fruits and vegetables (like bananas, apples, cucumbers, carrots). Every two or three times you should dust the feeders with special vitamin powder.

The Terrarium For The Leopard Gecko

For two leopard geckos the terrarium should be at least 100 x 50 x 50 (LBH). If more geckos inhabit the terrarium, it must of course be correspondingly larger.

Daytime temperatures should be 24 to 30 degrees, at night it may cool down to 18 degrees. During the day, leopard geckos love warm places, so they can use a heat lamp to create local temperatures of up to 40 degrees, for example, over a flat stone.

Terrarium sand with a high clay content is best for flooring. Leopard geckos like to burrow, so the sand should be scattered as high as possible.

To feel comfortable, leopard geckos need some narrow, moist caves. They can recreate these with clay tubes, for example, in which they place some damp moss.

For climbing, you should place some sturdy branches and twigs in the hospital. If you reinforce the back wall with cork, you create additional room for movement here.

You should light the terrarium for example with a HQI spotlight, a heat lamp and a UV lamp. Since leopard geckos are nocturnal, you can also install a night lamp that provides soft light in the dark and thus supports the activity of the animals.
