Size And Weight
Size: 51 to 56 cm
Weight: 18 to 27 kg
Appearance
The Bearded Collie has coarse, medium length, possibly slightly wavy hair and soft undercoat. The coat of earlier Bearded Collies was much rougher and harsher than that of today’s specimens, which is often silky and smooth.
The Bearded Collie comes in slate gray, reddish blond, black, blue-gray, gray, brown or sand colors with or without white markings.
History
Where exactly the Bearded Collie comes from, is unfortunately no longer exactly traceable. One assumes his origin in the Eastern European, shaggy herding dog breeds. They probably came to Scotland in the course of the cattle trade in the middle of the 19th century. There, too, they continued to serve as herding dogs for flocks of sheep and at the same time guarded house and yard.
Character
With a Bearded Collie comes life into the house. Originally from Scotland, the herding dog is a bundle of energy and likes to be kept busy due to its high intelligence.
Likewise, the Bearded Collie loves lots of exercise in nature. Running along with jogging or cycling as well as extensive romping with other dogs or hunting for balls or pieces are the greatest for him. The Bearded Collie is excellent for all kinds of dog sports. That with all these activities also times a lot of dirt comes into the house, one should be already conscious before the Bearded Collie acquisition.
As a rule, the Bearded Collie is a good family dog because of its gentleness. All family members – children and other pets included – are loved – and sometimes herded. This is because the herding instinct is still in the fuzz and must be watched and possibly somewhat contained by the owner. Despite its cute appearance, the Bearded Collie sometimes has it all behind the ears and shows the typical herding dog willfulness and stubbornness. Consistency is everything in this case. So if the dog is already enthusiastically chasing joggers as a puppy, you should stop this right at the beginning.
The fact that the Bearded Collie has become more and more of a fashion dog in the last few years is unfortunately reflected in the first breeding traits. Dogs from some breeding lines show themselves very anxious and sensitive, which the normal Bearded Collie should actually be nothing. Therefore, pay special attention to a good breeder with lively and self-confident animals.
A short word about the coat of the Bearded Collie: Of course it should be brushed regularly.
Health And Life Expectancy
Normally, the Bearded Collie is considered a robust and healthy dog. Unfortunately, like many larger breeds, it has a tendency to hip dysplasia.
The Bearded Collie can live up to 15 years.
